Great for the occasional underwater shooter
This case was a birthday gift and I must admit to some trepidation when submerging a Canon 5D body and 24-105 lens for the first time. Of course, the instructions advise testing the case first, which I did in the bathtub. It was bone dry inside, so I took the plunge with my camera inside. Here are my first underwater shots taken while snorkeling in the Crystal River of Florida: http://garyjean.zenfolio.com/p644207162I set the camera up for "dummy mode" so that I wouldn't have to fiddle with controls. The shutter release was easy to operate. I could not get the zoom ring to turn, but it didn't really matter because wide angle was best for underwater shots anyway. A zoom lens left at wide angle, or a wide angle prime lens would be best. The case seals at two points. A UV coated polycarbonate lens screws on to the case over the camera lens. At the top, you seal the case like a zip-lock baggie, then fold a flap over several times like a dry bag. This seals...

You get what you pay for...
Hard shell cases cost thousands of dollars but give you full control. This bag is a little more than a Benjamin, and gives you almost no control over the camera. It is hard to look through the viewfinder and virtually impossible to change any settings. So you'll have to set the camera to P-mode (or "automatic") and hope for the best. Even then you'll have to press the glass window against the lens to prevent vignetting. Dicapac is suggesting the existence of lens adapter rings (which would fix the position of the glass window against the front element) but I have not seen those yet.So, despite all the shortcomings, four stars? Yes, because for a very small amount this bag WILL allow you to use your SLR under water. Although rated for something like 20' I would not try it out that deep, but I felt perfectly safe using it in a pool. Once the sealing is properly closed the camera is perfectly safe and I sense that the recommendation in the manual to test the bag in a...

Love this case!!!!
My husband and I purchased this case before our trip to Florida and it was well worth it!!! The camera was well protected from the sand and water! The pictures taken on our snorkle trip in the key were amazing. I would recommend this case to anyone going to the beach, pool or who have children. I am very excited about summer with my waterproof case!

Protect your Nikon digital SLR camera while swimming or snorkeling with this DiCAPac underwater camera case. Offering a guaranteed waterproof performance up to 5 meters (16 feet) deep, the case is perfect for anyone who wants to take pictures of tropical fish, coral, and other underwater wonders.

The waterproof case was tested in 2 underwater locations.
The transparent, flexible case is made of thick, high-grade vinyl, with a UV-coated polycarbonate lens cover that allows customers to take clear pictures in virtually any conditions. Plus, the unbreakable lens cover is coated with three layers--a UV coating, a scratch-resistant coating, and a water-repellent coating--so your camera lens stays safe in almost any environment. Best of all, the Roll & Velcro zipper closure system offers two levels of protection to keep your case completely watertight. Whether you're shooting in a downpour or photographing a shrimp from an underwater vantage point, the case steps to the plate. As a bonus, the camera case floats on water should you accidentally drop it from a boat.

Waterproof Simulation Test
DiCAPac camera cases were tested in two underwater locations: a 5-meter diving pool in Korea and at Sapang Beach in the Philippines, where it was mounted several meters beneath the water. At 5 meters, the camera performed perfectly, with all functions performing just as designed. It was more difficult to operate the manual camera controls at over 10 meters, because high water pressure was strong-arming the case. However, the case remained completely waterproof throughout. The waterproof tests indicate that the camera is protected from water, snow, rain, sand, and dust in daily life, but also functions well at the beach and in the pool.

The underwater case is compatible with the following Nikon digital SLR cameras: D700, D300, D200, D90, D80, D60, D5000, D40x, and D40.

Great Overall
Overall, this is a great product and allows you to take stunning underwater photos (way better than a waterproof point and shoot) It does take some getting used to though, and it's main drawback (as has been noted by other reviewers) is , because of the unneccesary hard plastic casing over the lens area, the lack of the ability to move the zoom ring on the barrel of a standard SLR lens. This drawback in itself will affect sales. Dicapac should do two things. Keep this model for people who want to use it for large zoom lenses-where you can move the zoom- and make another model which has a soft plastic casing over the lens area which would allow the zoom to be used on a smaller standard lens. I I sympathise with the guy who said he had a leak with hi product but I think this is very rare other wise there'd be lots of such stories on the internet (which there isn't. I did some research before buying this) But in general this is essential for ocean shots, swim shots, pool shots, rain...

Keeps the Watter Out
What can I say... this product didn't fail at what I needed it to do - Keep water out of my SLR for underwater shooting. That said, don't expect to be able to do a lot of fine tuning once you get underwater. You can get at the shutter button, and that's about it. No big deal, I just jammed it into full auto and let Nikon do the thinking for me. You are probably better off buying a dedicated underwater point and shoot (The case reduces your SLR to a P&S anyway). If you do decide to go this route a word of advice: Water magnifies your subject (If you ever used goggles, you get the idea). It also creates a lot of haze if there is to much of it between you and your subject. On my first attempt, I used a 24-70mm and even at 24, I had to get halfway across the pool. On my second attempt, I used the excellent Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. It fit reasonably well in the casing, and by getting closer to my subject, I was able to get much better results.Pros: Keeps the water out as...

A decent option for the occassional underwater photographer
I'll start the review by discussing the seller, as this item was not ship/sold from Amazon but instead 47th street photo. While the order took a day or two longer than Amazon itself usually requires all told from order to delivery was a little over a week. The product arrived in perfect condition so no complaints regarding the seller. In terms of the product, it's important to set realistic expectations for what you can do with it.1. Take it underwater. Clearly this is the most important aspect of this product and I found that my camera was safe and secure for up to 20 feet underwater (the farthest I went) without any issues of leakage.2. Fit. I have a Nikon D60 and used my standard 18-55mm lens to get the largest area for my shots. As a result the front of the case was not snug to the lens requiring I told it firm, or shots were nearly impossible to take. In the future I may use a longer lens or other means to fix this issue.3. Picture control. In...

Opteka, camera saver*
Pros: This is a pretty robust one. I am happy with its ability to handle the camera, and the twists in water. We took it for Canoeing and we flipped over in the water. It did not do any damage to the camera and I was happy.Cons: Its very bulky. Hard to manage the lens, zoom, and taking pictures. I have a Nikon D90 and it was moving around . I had to put a lot of padding to keep it in place so that I can access the photoclick button. I kept on getting a spherical ring whenever I tried to zoom out. It was difficult to keep the lens at the center, and it kept on drifting. Another disadvantage is that we cannot use Flash. When the flash popped up in auto mode, the pictures seemed to get worse. So, I prettymuch had to use it with my flash off.Manufacturers: It would be great if you can make the size at the front end fit the lens with the protective lens cover. This way, it gets locked to the lens and it will stay there. If you can create an additional holder for...

it works but not perfectly
I bought this housing for my Nikon D50 camera. I put it to the test during a Caribbean cruise where I snorkeled 3 times and took hundreds of photos underwater. In the same trip my wife used her Intova dive camera to take pictures during a scuba diving and 2 snorkeling trips. Here are the summary of my experience:The housing did not leak so I was able to take photos at a much faster rate than the Intova point and shoot camera. Still it is a rather expensive plastic housing. Its useful lifetime will depend on how long the plastic will not become brittle. My biggest problem was using the viewfinder. With my snorkeling mask it is difficult to look into the viewfinder to see what I am focusing on. One way to avoid this problem would be to get a newer Nikon with live-view in addition to a viewfinder. To get as much into the photo as possible I used a wide angle lens. However, it was difficult to zoom the lens in and out since it is difficult to rotate the lens.My wife's Intova...
